XIII. TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS
TRANSPORT STATISTICS
Transport and communication statistics include the operation
and traffic of railways, airways, inland waterways, road transport,
sea-borne and coastal shipping, Yangon port handling and Yangon
city transport as well as data on posts and telecommunications.
General Terms

Railway Transport
Statistics relating to rail transport are compiled by the
Statistics Section of the Myanma Railways. The data represent
the operation on all railway lines in the country except railways
serving plantation, forests, mines or industrial plants. Statistics
relating to diesel locomotives do not include diesel rail
cars.
Airways
The data include all traffic, both revenue and non revenue,
performed by the Myanmar Airways on scheduled services, non
scheduled services, special and charter services.
All passenger statistics of the Myanma Airways are compiled
on the passenger journey made basis. Flight coupons provided
to the passengers by the carrier as the passenger performs
his journey form the basis for compilation. Major changes
in passenger's air journey, e.g. cancellations, extensions
or transfers made after the sale of tickets are excluded.
Data relating to cargo represent the total freight, baggage
and mail irrespective of whether the freight is charged or
not. All statistics presented are obtained from the Myanma
Airways.
Statistics of airfields are obtained from the Department of
Civil Aviation. Data are broken down into airfields used for
all weather and airfields unused during the monsoon season.
Inland Water Transport
Inland water transport statistics are obtained from the Inland
Water Transport. The data relate to all traffic of powered
vessels of the government functioning on commercial lines.
Inland water traffic is also performed by private owned powered
craft for which certificated number is shown.
Commodity statistics are obtained from the Inland Water Transport.
Apart from selected commodity items such as rice, cement,
petroleum coke and fertilizer, all other items are shown as
"Miscellaneous".
Shipping Statistics
Shipping Statistics are obtained from Customs Department and
Myanmar Port Authority. They exclude vessels on government
duty including military, pleasure craft and fishing vessels.
For sea-borne shipping statistics, a ship entering or leaving
Myanma waters from or for a foreign port is counted only once,
irrespective of the number of ports she enters. Subsequent entrances
and clearances of a foreign vessel after entering Myanma waters
for the first time in a trip are included in coastal statistics.
Statistics concerning passengers, sea-going
and inland number and capacity of vessels arriving at and
departing from Myanmar by flag of ship, seaborne cargo by
principal commodity and commodity section are obtained from
the Myanma Port Authority. Seaborne cargo handled at the wharves
foreshores and mid-stream are compiled from chelan receipt
issued from wharf berths and mid-stream statements which include
foreshore.
Road Transport
Public Transport - Statistics relating to public road
transport are compiled by the Statistics Division of the Road
Transport. Passenger statistics include bus and taxi services.
Passenger tickets and haulage form the basis
for compilation of passenger statistics and freight statistics
respectively.
The Road Transport Board was reorganized
as the Road Transport Corporation on 1 October, 1972, along
with the New System of Organization. Road Transport Corporation
was again renamed as Road Transport since 1 April 1989.
Data for registered motor vehicles cover
both private and public sectors. Those cars which can accommodate
a maximum of 8 passengers are classified as passenger cars.
The 1990 reclassification reduced the number of types of registered
motor vehicles from 12 to 8 as shown in table 13.21.
Road statistics are obtained from the Public
Works and include Union arterial highways and highways for
Myanma proper only. With the establishment of the new administration
in March 1972, data for the year 1972-73 and after, include
road under States administration.
Private Transport- Yangon City private transport statistics
(including passenger pick-ups) are compiled from its original
source of authority viz., Yangon Division Buses Control Committee.
Tonnage - Registered tonnage is the total volume of
all enclosed space of vessel (gross tonnage) minus space not
used for passenger or cargo.
Lighthouses
Figures relating to lighthouses are obtained from the Myanma
Port Authority. Lighthouses are classified into two categories
viz., those with and those without lightkeepers.
COMMUNICATIONS STATISTICS
Statistics on performance of posts and telecommunications
services are obtained from the Myanma Posts and Telecommunications
Enterprise and Posts and Telecommunications Department, while
data on television relay stations are provided by Myanma Radio
and Television.
Data on telephone include both the main
ones and extensions. Up to 2001-2002, 111 Automatic Telephone
Exchanges have been introduced in cities and towns of Myanmar
viz., Yangon, Mandalay, Magway, Sagaing, Bago, Pathein, Mawlamyine,
Taunggyi, Myitkyina, Sittwe, etc.
Expansion of Telecommunication Works
Internationally widely used Cellular Mobile
Telephone System was begun in Yangon on 8-12-1993 and in Mandalay
on 21-3-1996.
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) Wireless Local Loop (WLL)
was first provided in Yangon on 17-10-1997 and later in Mandalay
on 14-8-2000.
Global system for Mobile Communication System (GSM) has been
introduced in Yangon on 12-3-2002 and in Mandalay since 7-
4-2002.
Myanma Posts and Telecommunications Enterprise provides internet
service to some government agencies and private companies
with an initial capacity of 400 dial-up lines, since 5-3-1998.
In order to promote ICT role in Myanmar,
Internet & E-mail service was introduced by Bagan Cybertech
in March 2002. It can use with any digital telephone line.
Arrangements are made for Internet & E-mail subscribers
from companies and organizations to make smooth communication
by means of Dial- up connection. Statistics on E-mail and
Internet are on display in table 13.24.
Radio Receivers Licences
Registration of radio receivers can be made at Township Post
Offices on payment of prescribed fees. Monthly statements
submitted by Township Post Offices are the main source for
compiling statistics on radio receivers licences.
Television and Video Licences
Number of licences on television and video are obtained from
Posts and Telecommunications Department whereas revenue realized
is furnished by Myanma Posts and Telecommunications. Annual
television and video licence fees are Kyat 120 and Kyat 60
respectively. Two television or two video sets can be registered
under a single licence. Licences have been issued since July
1, 1986. Duplicate licences can be obtained on payment of
kyat 20. For an overdue licence a fine of kyat 100 is charged
for the first month and for every additional month kyat 10
has to be paid. |
