Agriculture

          Myanmar is an agricultural country, and agriculture sector is the backbone of the economy and contributes about 40 % to the GDP, 23% of total export earning and employs, 63% of the labor force. 75 % of the total population reside in rural areas and are principally engaged in agriculture, livestock and fishery sector for their livelihood. About 60 crops can be grown such as rice, wheat, maize, millet, beans, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, jute, rubber, sugar cane, toddy palm, tobacco, spices and many others that are edible and non-edible.

          Total Land area is 67.6 million hectares (167.2 million acres). Cultivable land area is 13% , Irrigated Land is 25 % of total area.

          Major export items include rice, maize, black gram, green gram mung bean, pigeon bean, chick pea, sesame, niger, rubber, cashew nut, coffee, castor seed, vegetables and fruits.

  Livestock and Fishery

          Livestock - breeding of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig poultry and other animals Fishery - production and culture of fresh water and marine fisheries

  • Marine fishery is still relatively untapped and has vast potential for development.
  • Myanmar has a long coastline of 2,832 km., economic zone is 486,000 sq km wide. Maximum sustainable yield of 1.05 million metric tons per year.
  • Breeding of pig, poultry and cattle
  • Production of vaccines for pig, poultry and pets and veterinary pharmaceuticals

          Setting up of ice plant, cold storage facilities, fish meal plant, canning plant, shrimp farm and hatchery, making of fishing nets and construction of fishing boats.

  Forestry

          About 50% of Myanmar land area is covered with forest. More than 8,570 species of plant including 2300 species of trees, 850 kinds of orchids, 97 varieties of bamboo and 32 types of cane can be found.

          Annual potential yield of Teak is 0.6million Cubic ton. Exported 164,913 tons and 28,831 ton annually in log and conversion forms.

          The species of hardwood that have commercial value are Padauk, Kanyin, Taungthayet and Pine. Hardwood, Bamboo, Cane and other forest produce are using for production and marketing of Construction material, furniture and other productions. Production and Marketing of basic construction materials, furniture, parquet, using extracted and sold by the State Owned Economic Organizations. Fuel wood and wood charcoal are exported to Singapore and Thailand, rough squared wood to China, Japan, Singapore and Thailand, shaped wood to China, Japan, Singapore and Thailand, veneer and plywood to China, Japan, Singapore and Thailand, wood manufacturers to Japan and Singapore, manufactures of rattan and bamboo to appropriate markets.

  Mining

          Myanmar is well endowed with mineral resources and has many famous mines. The main minerals produced are refined lead, refined silver, zinc concentrate, copper concentrate, refined tin, tin concentrate, tin-wolfram-sheltie concentrate and gold. The precious stone produced are ruby, sapphire, diamond and jade. Industrial minerals produced include coal, gypsum, barite, limestone, dolomite, betonies, chromate, fireclay, fluoride, granite and various other items. Responsible Ministry welcomes foreign investors to explore, develop and exploit the mineral resources of the country, for mutual benefit.

  Tourism

          Myanmar Tourism Law and the Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Law were enacted for the developing of Tourism and Hotel industry. Currently, thirty hotels are being constructed in Yangon and Mandalay, which will provide over 5000 rooms when they are completed. Other popular tourist destinations such as Bagan, Inle, Ngapali and other newly opened areas.
